We use Linode for all our hosting needs, from custom services to web servers and databases.
  • Customer service
  • Uptime
  • Scaleability
  • Ease of use
  • Cost efficient
  • Flexibility
  • Managed services
  • Serverless
Linode is well suited for everything from prototypes, proof of concept to large-scale applications where uptime and availability are key. Linode ticks almost all the checkboxes, but if you need managed databases or serverless infrastructure, then Linode might not be the best choice.

Our main use of Linode is proof of concept testing. Because Linode bills only for the exact amount of use time of a virtual machine, plus makes it very user friendly and fast to configure, and has a lot of interesting "Marketplace" applications, it can be very easy and cheap to setup an entire test environment, try it out for a few days and delete it, only being billed for used hours.
  • Configuring new VMs
  • Simple billing model
  • Managing VM security
  • More backup options would be useful for production environments.
  • An even larger range of Marketplace applications would be good.
For setting up test/proof of concept environments, Linode is outstanding. I haven't found an alternative where configuration is nearly as simple, and the fact you get billed based on exact usage means you can test a system that costs $1000 a month, and only pay for a single day's use of it.

If large/unlimited bandwidth is needed, other providers are better. But I find Linode generally also offers better performance within its bandwidth limits.

And while the automatic backup system is very limited, it is also very useful, cheap and easy to use in some specific scenarios.

We use Linode for hosting a number of sites ranging in scale. The flexibility of the servers with known fixed pricing is really useful and allows us to plan well in advance. Additionally the speed with which we can spin up new servers allows us to scale for short-term spikes in traffic in a managed way.
  • Customer support is always fast and knowledgeable.
  • Pricing is competitive.
  • The web UI is easy to navigate.
  • Sometimes I'd like to be able to specify more configured options for a virtual server.
  • Bandwidth out--should be less of concern these days.
Linode is well suited for an easy-to-manage infrastructure if you have a small to moderate level of knowledge around hosting. It's not for a complete newbie who is just looking to host a Wordpress site, for example. I've never used any of their services or servers for email, so I have no idea how things perform there.

We started using Linode hosting services in 2017. Moving from DigitalOcean, our motivation at the beginning was just pricing. But after four years I can say reliability and professional service is key for remaining. We still have some servers running on a local data center, but have plans to move all of them to Linode in next months/years. We use Linode's VPS for custom web services for all customers, which are small companies. For $5 to $20 at month, we can host a web application with some hundreds of users.
  • Administration panel is easy to use.
  • VPS is pretty fast, enough for our needs.
  • When a problem arises, they notify us and solve it in minutes.
  • Recently I was surprised to find more regions in Europe to place my VPS
  • Billing. I wish to have invoices in Euros.
  • Due to Brexit, we abandoned our London data center. I would like to have some other in Spain or France to balance our assets.
  • I would like to know more about how secure Linode's data centers are. We know literally nothing about these infrastructures.
  • They added more regions in Europe. But billing remains in USD only
For small web services or applications, you don't need the scalability of AWS, Azure or GCP. With Linode you have no surprises in the monthly cost. Otherwise, if you need to scale fast or by season demands, you'll need to do a lot of work manually.
We also use Object Storage. It fits all our needs for a small project.

With the exception of email, we use Linode as the foundation of our entire web-stack. Linode has been rock solid and their support on the rare occasion we have run into difficulty has been second to none. The transition to Linode being acquired by Akamai has thus far been without any issue.
  • Reliability
  • Customer Support
  • Cutting Edge Technology
  • Email is a hard problem to solve well. A secure, plug-and-play solution from Linode would have made this aspect the web side of our business a snap.
It's perfect for any individual, company, or team that is comfortable running their own servers. It is not necessarily ideal for a small company that just wants to put up a simple website. It is also not ideal if you want a one-stop solution for all of a company's online needs. However, in this day and age, such a solution doesn't really exist anywhere anymore and Linode is the next best thing.

We have been using Linode to power websites, web, and mobile applications for our customers for around eight years. We have been managing Linode accounts for few customers and would strongly recommend any developer to start with it. The dedicated CPU plans are quite powerful and affordable, unlike market leaders stealing our CPU power. The addition of new services like Object and Block Storage really gives flexibility to developers. The upcoming Cloud Firewall and Bare Metal option would help us reach more Enterprise customers. The Marketplace library and Stack script options make Linode unique and customizable to spin an instance. Availability of Mumbai region in India has further added scope to our services. Hope we get more regions in India soon.
  • Dedicated CPU.
  • Developer friendly services.
  • Affordable cost.
  • Detailed monitoring and analytics.
  • Availability in India.
  • More regions in India.
  • Waiting for Bare Metals.
  • Email services would be great.
Linode perfectly fits any startup. Not just that, it holds true for design and development business[es] to manage their client’s websites and applications with ease. Scalability is never a problem with Linode. Having said that, a load balanced cluster setup fits precisely for any Enterprise requirements. The availability of multiple linux flavors also gives us an additional choice while setting up opensource applications. Though we are using few Linodes for email servers, we would love to have an email service from Linode. That would take off our worries about managing the email server and services. We had been receiving few requirements year ago on GPU based applications, which we weren't able to take up. Now with the availability of GPU plans we don't have to worry.

We are a web design and development company. We use Linode to deploy and host customer websites in the cloud. We use their VPS and storage solutions to provide our clients with a solid and reliable foundation. Linode is not the fastest or slowest solution out there but they are reliable and predictable, which is what you want from an upstream provider. Been a loyal customer since 2009.
  • Reliable
  • Quick, friendly customer service
  • Good value for money
  • S3-compatible storage across all data centers
  • NFS block storage over multiple nodes
  • More automated backup options
  • Ability to assign our own IPs to load balancers
  • Global networking option
It excels at small/medium business needs, maybe less so for enterprise use. Though from what I’ve used, the managed Kubernetes offering is pretty strong. Linode doesn’t offer everything like AWS or even similar competitors like Digital Ocean, but what they do offer is strong. We especially like that in most cases the pricing is very predictable. Very generous bandwidth.

Linode hosts the server infrastructure for our entire organization. We have a dozen server instances for a variety of purposes, from dedicated APIs to databases to various front-end web presences. Linode also hosts the majority of our DNS. Their flexibility with instances and cost ensure that we can spin up exactly the correct sized cloud instance for a small project, or throw a lot of resources for our high-availability needs.
  • Uptime for hosted servers
  • Ease of DNS hosting
  • Ease of load balancing implementation
  • Painless deployment process
  • We don't take advantage of their Kubernetes program. No real need.
If you want a fully hosted and supported solution like Heroku, Linode isn't for you. For someone with experience dealing with server deployment and management, Linode fits the bill. But you have to arrive with at least some proficiency in command line management if you want to user Linode to its fullest. Happily they have plenty of tutorials in their library to fill in the experience blanks for beginners.

We rely on Linode to fulfill our cloud computing requirements, leveraging Virtual Private Servers (VPS) across our suite of products and services deployed on production sites. Linode serves as the backbone for our daily development operations, encompassing testing processes and hosting needs. Additionally, we utilize Linode for web and email hosting, as well as managing Domain Name Servers (DNS) and orchestrating Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) pipelines. Essentially, Linode is integral to our entire operational ecosystem, supporting various facets of our business infrastructure and workflow.
  • Virtual Private Server.
  • Web hosting.
  • Domain Name Server.
  • Linode CLI.
  • Monitoring
Linode stands out as the optimal choice for on-demand Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), seamlessly spinning up Virtual Private Servers (VPS) to meet our dynamic needs. Its user-friendly dashboard offers unparalleled ease in monitoring critical metrics such as CPU load, RAM utilization, and network traffic, providing valuable insights into our system's performance in real-time. Moreover, Linode excels in managing Domain Name Servers (DNS), offering a comprehensive array of Zone Records to effectively handle our domain management requirements. One of Linode's notable strengths lies in its compatibility with automation tasks through the Linode API. This capability empowers us to streamline and optimize our processes by automating various tasks, enhancing efficiency and reducing manual intervention. In essence, Linode not only delivers exceptional performance and reliability but also offers the flexibility and tools necessary to automate and manage our infrastructure seamlessly.

We use Linode for all of our production Web and API hosting, powering not only our websites and apps, but our customers websites and apps. Linode enables us to host all of our public facing systems on secure and scalable Linux based system, with minimal downtime and well documented (and so easily preparable for) network outage windows.
  • Price.
  • Easy of use.
  • Security.
  • Reliability.
  • More product offerings.
  • Improved Windows support.
  • More geo-located options.
Linode is suitable if you are a start up, as it is not only low cost, but easily scalable. You do not suffer from vendor lock in to the degree you would on the Microsoft or AWS platforms. Linode's documentation is also quite extensive, and there support are their if you really get stuck. For the price, you will not find another provider with better performance or uptime.

We were a small hosting company, all of our web servers and various other services were run on Linode's platform. Although I have largely exited the Webhosting industry, I still have a few Linodes hosting our internal applications, customer-facing website, and a few remaining customer sites. To this day, I run some public mirrors for a few open-source projects.

Linode is a self-managed platform, you get a VPS that you control, and you need to know what you're getting into. If you're comfortable as a system administrator, then Linode is fantastic, but if you want a ready-to-go web host, Linode isn't your thing.

Having true root access including the ability to deploy your file system is spectacular, and you aren't limited to what their backend tools want to offer. I did have issues with jitter when trying to run our VoIP platform on Linode, but admittedly, my office's internet provider is not well-connected to where Linode's servers are located. We had similar issues [with] other VPS providers until we went to a VoIP-specific provider. I wish they offered Windows Servers too, but I'm a minority there.

I've used Linode for virtual private servers for over a decade. They have been consistent, reliable, affordable, and more effective than I could hope. Currently, my Linode VPSs serve as both the frontend webservers and backend database servers for every website I host. Recently I also deployed Linode object storage to manage backups and large object delivery, and it was a very low-effort move from my previous AWS S3 implementation.
  • Their virtual private servers are fast and easy to deploy and manage.
  • DNS integration is a really welcome bonus.
  • Object storage is easy to implement and deploy.
  • Better API access to object storage public URLs.
As a fairly small business owner, Linode is my cloud service provider of choice for any deployment that requires long-running virtual private servers. They are an excellent alternative to the big-name monolithic cloud service providers like GCP and AWS, and frankly, Linode is friendly and personable. It feels like they are always ready to support even their smallest customers.

We are currently using Linode shared instances for hosting our entire project, as well as Linode's block storage for managing storage capacity. We have begun migration away from some services we were relying on AWS for, and moving them onto Linode's platform including some Amazon S3 storage and moving them to block.
  • Reliability.
  • Customer Service.
  • Price.
  • Less features than AWS.
My organization has relied heavily on AWS for everything for many years - however we have started migrating to more and more of Linode's services. The customer support is faster and better, the prices are more affordable, and the speed and reliability is equal to what AWS was offering. I am also confident in the ability to scale under Linode.

Linode powers the servers that run our website and blog.
  • Reliable services.
  • Excellent web interfaces.
  • Competitive pricing.

  • No cons! Maybe it could be even cheaper or easier to use…
I came to Linode without much prior experience managing servers. I really appreciated the thorough documentation to help me set up a server, configure a web server, keep the system as secure as possible, and maintain everything. I can start small and grow with Linode as my company grows.

  • Uptime - high availability and great communication about upcoming maintenance.
  • Customer Service - Very technical contacts, able to understand requirements and assist if necessary.
  • Pricing - Very competitive pricing, pay for what you use.

If you just need a website and don’t have a desire to learn server administration, Linode isn’t for you. For any service where virtualized servers are appropriate, it’s hard for me to see where Linode would be unsuitable. As a CRM consulting business, I need to be able to quickly spin up demo systems from archives; download whole instances of servers; work remotely and have reliable and responsive support for any issues at the Linode end.

Linode has provided us with a great range of cloud solutions to meet our changing needs.

Well done Linode!
  • Cloud Block Storage for archive server
  • Rsync access from servers to local site and return
  • Immediate messaging for server bumps and the like
  • Since Linode met all my current needs, I believe they will meet them as our business changes

We use Linode in multiple ways, from specialized development platforms to SSH and VPN hosts to NextCloud servers.

It is very easy to create a new VM with Linode, install a particular Linux Distribution, and then customize the environment to suit the specific needs of that application or developer.

Some of the machines that we have created as development machines have gone on to become test and production machines, or other machines have been created as almost duplicates of those development machines.
  • Technical Support
  • Ease of creation
  • Ease of modification ( settings, etc )
  • Easy to allocate IP addresses, both IPv4 and IPv6.
  • Some of the documentation requires some hand-holding to get started. It does explain how to do things, but sometimes finding the answer takes work.
  • Some of the settings are not obvious, or in locations that are not completely clear without experience.
Linode provides a wide range of configurations and prices, suitable for many budgets and needs. They also have a lot of experience in providing these services for many years.

We have almost exclusively used Debian distributions for our work, but they offer a large number of other versions of Linux.

Beside "raw" distributions of Linux, they also offer other VMs containing specialized installations of a variety of applications, such as Wordpress, Drupal and Docker.

We have been using Linode public cloud for various security experiments at the University of Waterloo SWAG lab. First, we assessed the benchmark of the cloud instances and scanned for default security mechanisms available in the public instance of Linode for research study purposes. We went on using Linode for processing our Kafka Stream events separately to determine its capacity and usage across our SWAG lab.
  • Default security updates
  • Efficient computing instances
  • Well defined admin panel to manage instances
  • Customer support
  • Estimate billing based on usages
  • S3 like bucket object
Linode is comparatively affordable to Azure and, GCP, AWS. For starters experiments, I would strongly suggest Linode as the best place to begin experimentation. Linode is very cost-effective for setting up custom tech stacks like LAMP or MEAN stack to deploy applications. Additionally, the documentation was really good for self-support users.

We use Linode to host custom software applications that we write, to host websites, and to store off-site backups.
  • It's super easy-to-use - set up a complete virtual environment in a few minutes.
  • Linode is the ONLY service I know that will let you DOWNSIZE a VM - super useful.
  • The price is right - spin up any size server and add additional block storage if needed.
  • Object memory is cheap and integrates very well with S3 CLIs and applications.
  • I've been very happy with the knowledgeable and friendly customer service.
  • The more recent additions of a firewall and Kubernetes is a welcome plus.
  • The load balancer ("Load Balancer") service is easy to spin up and configure.
  • I'd love to see the ability to make snapshots, vs full backups only.
We do both software development and DevOps. In nearly EVERY case, Linode was a better fit for our clients than the "Big 3" competitors, based on Linode's simple, predictable pricing structure, and the ease of provisioning and configuring... which typically takes about 1/10 of the time compared to the "Big 3".

I've been with Linode for more than 10 years now. There was a short period of time about 8 years ago when they were hit with DDOS attacks. Their clear communication during that time was what kept me with them while many started switching to other services, but they've proven to be reliable ever since and I have never found any reason to move away from them. Their Virtual Servers are still cheaper (and less complicated to set up) than the "Big" players like AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure. For the last few years, I've deployed all my Linode services using forge.laravel.com - I'm not aware of any server deployment solution that could be more seamless.
  • Great Customer Support
  • Clear communication during major events
  • Slower to introduce "new" solutions such as S3 storage, Kubernetes, cloud functions, etc.
For a small number of single-purpose or bespoke virtual servers, Linode is my go-to solution. For something larger such as Kubernetes clusters, I would veer towards Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, or Microsoft Azure.

The cloud compute marketplace is increasingly crowded, and results are not always consistent - low-cost offerings can look appealing, but my experience of using Linode is that they provide consistently great performance at a price point others can't match. Their portfolio of products is ever-expanding, and yet they are really focussing on being good at a few things rather than blurring heavily into the SaaS approach. I love using Linode for my ephemeral compute requirements, especially when prototyping or performing research and development.
  • High performance Linux based compute
  • Flexible, pay as you go pricing that has become the norm in the industry
  • Great support from real human beings!
  • If you're looking for SaaS, look elsewhere, but that's not what I go to Linode for
  • Storage prices are high
If you want a robust, reliable, high-performance cloud compute solution then I personally feel that Linode is a great place to start. Great for spinning up an application server quickly and at a low cost, although it would be good to have reserved instances or be able to pause billing on servers that are shutdown for a period of time.
